FAQ

Got Questions? We Have Answers.

How is USA Datanet different from traditional phone companies?

The main difference is in the types of lines we use to provide service. Phone companies generally use voice-only lines or lines that have minimal data capabilities, which means limited or no Internet service. This is why you may often experience slow speeds and lag times with the DSL service provided by your phone company. Instead, we use high-speed data lines – the same ones used by cable providers and major telecommunications organizations to transmit both voice and data/Internet. The result is more affordable phone service along with reliable high-speed Internet service.

How is USA Datanet different from the phone service my cable Internet provider offers?

The key difference between internet and cable providers and USA Datanet lies in our service. As a division of a 100-year-old phone and telecommunications company, our focus is on excellent phone and Internet service. Many cable and Internet providers are focused on only the television or Internet experience and look at VOIP as an additional revenue stream. Our unique roots in telecommunications allow us to appreciate and understand the importance of voice solutions for today’s businesses. That means we pride ourselves on our ability to serve our customers with quality, performance, and a dedication to deliver leading-edge telephone communications solutions as well as innovative Internet-enabled fax, conferencing, email and other communications systems.

Your site mentions Hosted IP Voice – what does that mean?

The idea of using Internet lines to carry voice information is not new. It began back in the late 1990s with Internet Telephony… which turned voice signals into data signals, transmitted them, then turned the data signals back into voice signals. The quality was poor, you needed special hardware to send and receive signals, whomever you were contacting often needed the same service and there was little other functionality like voicemail or call forwarding available. Additionally, information was carried over the public Internet, exposing security issues for individuals and businesses.

Hosted IP Voice is a next-generation solution that provides you small to medium-sized business with clear call quality that is equivalent or better than standard phone carriers, high-speed Internet access and web services and integrated communications tools like e-fax, email and conferencing. What’s even better is that all of this information is carried over secure lines, maximizing security and enabling us to guarantee quality of service to all of our customers.

Sounds expensive… is it?

You’d be surprised how affordable USA Datanet plans can be. Our customized pricing options are the secret. Our approach is that you should only pay for those services you truly need, and nothing else. We sell services bundled for one monthly price. In addition, you will find that our hardware and online account management tools already include many of the most commonly requested services at little or no charge.

I’ve heard that VoIP is unreliable and that there are dropped calls, interruptions and bad voice quality?

VoIP voice quality has dramatically improved over the past few years, and is equivalent (some say better) to the Standard Telephone Lines in terms of voice clarity and reliability. This was not always the case, but advances in technology have virtually eliminated any problems we experienced back when VoIP was first introduced to the telecommunications industry.

Initially, the need for speed was a critical factor. Internet connections were slower years ago, and expensive T1 lines were more useful to produce the same call quality and reliability we were used to with our regular telephones. But the T1 lines were too costly for small businesses, and the costs far outweighed the benefits. That has all changed now with high speed broadband service available, offering faster speed each year, for less money. The cost for T1 lines has come down in response to competition with fast DSL and Cable speeds, but unless you are a larger business and connecting many phone lines, high-speed broadband is plenty of bandwidth to handle your VoIP business needs. Generally speaking, as long as there is enough bandwidth in use, the quality of service will be the same for VoIP and traditional phone service.

When considering VoIp for your business, discussing your company’s phone usage with a USA Datanet Customer Service Advisor is key to assuring that you experience the many benefits and features a VoIP phone system has to offer.
